Shakeology Misconceptions

It seems to me that of all the different kinds of health shakes out there, people have the most misconceptions about Shakeology.  My hope here is to knock down some of those misconceptions and shed some light on this amazing meal!

Misconception #1:  Shakeology is a protein shake.

Yes, Shakeology has a good amount of protein in it.  17 grams per serving, in fact.  However, most protein powders that you would find in a health food store have as much as 24 grams of protein per serving.  Secondly, protein shakes generally provide only one main thing:  Protein.

No, Shakeology is not a protein shake.  It is a nutrient-dense MEAL REPLACEMENT that has the vitamins and nutrients equal to 5 salads or:

1 bowl of exotic fruit
4 cups of raw broccoli
7 whole carrots
10 cups of raw cauliflower
3 cups of romaine lettuce
4 cups of uncooked mushrooms
3 raw onions
1 cup of peas
4 cups of red radishes
4 cups of non-fat yogurt
1 shot of wheatgrass

I think most of this stuff is gross, yet I'm getting the benefits of all of it in a chocolate shake every day.  Most people are not ingesting the enough vitamins and nutrients equivalent to either what is found in shakeology OR in the list, no matter how much you like vegetables.  Why stop at just a protein shake, when you can get all of this as well?

Misconception #2:  Shakeology is not a whole food.

People say that if it's a powder, then it can't be a natural whole food.  Almost all of the ingredients listed on the label was imported from it's country of origin.  Then, each of the superfoods in its entirety goes through a unique and tedious drying process so that the integrity of the nutritional enzymes can be preserved and it can be ground and stored in a bag.  It is a form of "processing", but not the processing you see in typical bagged/canned/packaged foods. If you check the ingredients on the label, there are no added chemicals, preservatives or any artificial colors, flavors or even sugars added.  Stevia, the sugar in Shakeology, is plant-based.  You can read more about it here.

Misconception #3:  Shakeology is expensive.

I absolutely thought this was true when I first heard the price.  $130?!  I started thinking about where my baseline for that assumption came from.  What was my typical breakfast in the morning?  A yogurt that costs $1.15 each?  A bowl of cereal from a box that cost $4.99?  Yeah... Shakeology is expensive in comparison to that.  But then I started thinking about what it would cost if I bought all the foods I would need to equal the vitamins and nutrients in one serving of Shakeology...

For a grand total of- $41.19 PER SERVING.  Multiply that by the 30 servings in a bag of Shakeology and you get $1235.70.  All of a sudden, $130 wasn't looking so bad after all.

The other thing I had to consider was what MOST Americans spend on breakfast every morning (not just me).  Starbucks?  Dunkin Donuts?  McDonalds?  We know these options are not even remotely healthy... but how do the prices compare?

This is just for a White Chocolate Mocha.  There isn't even any food involved.  I make my Shakeology taste like a Peppermint Mocha Frap EVERY DAY #justsayin.

Misconception #4:  Shakeology is a weight loss shake.

What happens when you eat like crap and then you start eating healthy food?  Yeah, you lose weight. So, if you substitute Shakeology with you most unhealthy meal of the day, will you lose weight?  Most likely, especially if that unhealthy meal was REALLY unhealthy!  However, when I started drinking Shakeology, I didn't lose one pound.  Not a single pound!  Instead, I lost 2 inches around my waist, 2 inches around my chest, and I GAINED muscle definition and energy.  I feel satisfied longer and I no longer feel the craving for sweets and soda like I used to.  So far I have been drinking Shakeology daily for about 9 months and I'm excited to see if I can stop taking my cholesterol medication (which I take for hereditary high cholesterol).

What if you need to GAIN weight?  Shakeology is nutrient-dense calories.  It is a base, a vehicle through which to take in other healthy foods.  Add fruit, add veggies, add almond milk or nut butters. Anything you add will increase the nutritional value of Shakeology and increase the calories.
